After announcing a new StarCraft title and Diablo 5, Blizzard’s president explained why the release windows for both games were revealed, even though they are years away.
On the first day of BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard Entertainment announced that a brand-new StarCraft, the long-rumored shooter reboot of the franchise, would release in 2030. It also announced that Diablo 5 would release in Spring 2029. This was a strong way to bring back BlizzCon, but now, amid rapid change in the game industry, memory shortages, and deadline concerns, Blizzard is defending this decision and promising to deliver in a big way.

Blizzard Defends Announcing Diablo 5 and StarCraft Early
In an interview with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Blizzard president Johanna Faries said they intend to ship big projects on time and ensure everyone in the company is working toward success.
“We want to convey confidence in some of our biggest bets coming forward,” said Johanna Faries, Blizzard’s president. “We’re a Blizzard that’s going to ship, and ship big, and ship on time, and all hands on deck to set those projects up for success.”
They also discussed the decision to title the new StarCraft release simply “StarCraft.” Nintendo recently made a similar move, calling the remake of Star Fox 64 on the Nintendo Switch 2 “Star Fox.”
In Blizzard’s case, Faries said the move was meant to assure audiences the game wasn’t straying too far from its strategy roots and to start a new conversation around the long-standing brand.
“We came out with a strong belief that this is a StarCraft for the modern, next generation of players without departing from our RTS roots,” she said. “And we’ll have more to say about that, you know, over the years here.”
