Sony Santa Monica's upcoming God of War Laufey has officially been delayed beyond its original February 16, 2027 release date. The developer didn't get too deep into why God of War Laufey is being delayed, only sharing a simple statement that it wants to put the finishing touches on the game and let it reach its full potential. This delay leaves Until Dawn 2 as the PlayStation 5's major Q1 2027 release.
God of War Laufey was originally announced back in June as a follow-up to 2022's God of War Ragnarok that replaces Kratos as the series protagonist for the first time ever. Taking the reins in God of War Laufey is Faye, the deceased wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, who awakens in the land of Everywhen. Featured in God of War Laufey are deities from mythologies the series hasn't fully explored before, such as Sekhmet from Egyptian mythology and Begtse from Mongolian mythology.
God of War Laufey Delayed to May 2027
In a statement shared by the official Santa Monica Studio Twitter account, the developer confirms that God of War Laufey's release date is being pushed back to May 20, 2027. Previously slated for February 16, this delay moves God of War Laufey out of the way of other major game releases in February 2027, including Metro 2039, Persona 4 Revival, and Xbox's Fable. The three-month delay is said to give the developer time to further polish the game and make it the best experience it can be at launch.
The game has already seen its fair share of controversy in the time since its announcement, with the replacement of Kratos with Faye as the protagonist for the first time in the series proving to be divisive among fans. The addition of the gelatinous cosmic cube Phranque has also rubbed some fans the wrong way, leaving some fans skeptical of the game's tone given the franchise's more serious nature. Faye's actor Deborah Ann Woll has responded to some of the fan criticism with her own thoughts, expressing her belief in the game's quality.

Faye comes with her own set of skills unique from Kratos, including greater mobility that allows for a smooth transition between ground and aerial attacks. She can also separate an enemy's soul from its body using her Golden Hand of the Jotnar, knocking detached souls into other enemies mid-combo.
Fan response to the game's delay has largely been positive, with many noting that God of War Laufey has a better chance to stand out when it's not competing with a packed February 2027 gaming lineup. The delay leaves Until Dawn 2 as Sony's primary PS5-exclusive game launching early in 2027, bringing the horror series back with a sequel to its 2015 debut entry. PlayStation 5 players will still get to play plenty of third-party games between Until Dawn 2 and God of War Laufey's releases, including the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, releasing in April 2027.
