Which is the best version of Steins;Gate Reboot? PS5, Switch 2, Switch, Steam
by Mikhail Madnani on 22 October, 2026

Spike Chunsoft is launching Steins;Gate Re:Boot for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and Switch 1 next week in North America and Europe following its worldwide PC release a few months ago. Ahead of its launch, I had a chance to play Steins;Gate Reboot on PS5, Switch 2, and Switch 1 for my comparison article. I also revisited the Steam version on PC handhelds. Note that Xbox review keys were not available until launch day so I was unable to cover it in this article right now. I will update it when I get Xbox code. If you haven't done so, read our review of Steins;Gate Reboot here.

Steins;Gate Reboot features across PS5, Switch 2, Switch 1, and PC

While many good visual novels feature touch support on Switch 1/2, Steins;Gate Reboot unfortunately does not. It has essentially the same feature set across consoles and PC platforms, though the PC version's input options allow for using the touchscreen on handhelds. The Xbox version also does not support Xbox Play Anywhere. The only real feature advantage here is for the Switch 1/2 versions because they are hybrid consoles.

Steins;Gate Reboot visuals across PS5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC

On the portable side, you are getting a resolution match for the handheld's display in Steins;Gate Reboot across all four devices I tested on. Note that I was not able to check AYN Thor performance because the game didn't boot up for me regardless of the configuration and settings I tried. The Switch 1, Switch 2, Steam Deck, and ROG Ally all deliver a perfect visual experience for portable play. I was curious to see how docked would be, and the results are more interesting than I expected. The Switch 1 version is the lowest resolution of the lot, but the Switch 2 and PS5 versions have some differences.

I expected them to be the same, but the PS5 version has higher resolution fonts or UI in some situations whereas the Switch 2 version's character art looks better in others. They are very close and I had to zoom in quite a bit, but there is a difference in how both versions are rendered or how the 2D art is sampled despite the resolution appearing the same. When I played on my 1440p monitor, there was no noticeable difference between PS5 and Switch 2, but they are both better than the Switch 1 version. I'm curious to see how the Xbox Series X version is when I get access to it in the near future.

Note: The handheld comparison was done using Steam screenshots for PC handhelds and the Switch 1/2 screenshot functionality. The docked comparison was done using 4K capture taken from all platforms docked.

Steins;Gate Reboot load times across PS5, Switch 2, Switch 1, Steam Deck, and ROG Ally

Steins;Gate Reboot loads very quickly while in-game including the save files. The main difference is in the initial load from the dashboard to the title screen. To test this, I installed Steins;Gate Reboot on my Switch 1 (SD card), Switch 2 (internal storage for both S1 and S2 versions), PS5 Pro internal storage, Steam Deck internal storage, and ROG Ally internal storage. The results below are in seconds.

As you can see, the PS5 is the fastest, but no version takes too long. These load times are great given the devices. I am a bit confused as to why the ROG Ally took longer here compared to Steam Deck though. I verified that on two different installs multiple times.

Which is the best version of Steins;Gate Reboot?

Right now, the Switch 2 version is the best console version because you can play it at home and on the go with it delivering good visuals across the board. The Switch 1 version is great for portable play, especially on the OLED model, but it is lacking docked if you play at 1440p. The PS5 version offers faster loading initially and is the way to go if you only play on TV and care about trophy support.

For a pure portable experience, the Steam Deck version on a Steam Deck OLED or the Switch 2 version are the way to go depending on if you prefer the larger screen and ability to dock on Switch 2 or the much better display on the Steam Deck OLED. I'm going to stick to the Switch 2 version for my full playthrough.

Which version of Steins;Gate Reboot should you buy?

  • Steins;Gate Reboot on Switch 1: While this version is soft when it comes to docked play compared to other platforms, Steins;Gate Reboot looks excellent handheld and on the OLED model. If you have a Switch 1 and were hoping the port was good, you can rest easy and grab it. Barring the initial load being longer, it is fine and is also available physically if you, like me, prefer physical versions of visual novels.
  • Steins;Gate Reboot on Switch 2: This is my favorite version given the native resolution handheld, solid docked experience, and with it being available physically. I've always preferred playing visual novels on portables and my only complaint with this port is the lack of touchscreen support.
  • Steins;Gate Reboot on PS5: If you want to play on your TV, care about trophy support, and don't care about portable play (unless you stream to a PlayStation Portal or phone), this is the version to get. It is also the fastest version when it comes to the initial load. Steins;Gate Reboot is available physically on PS5 as well.
  • Steins;Gate Reboot on Xbox Series: I will update this when I get access to it. Note that it is a digital-only release on Xbox.
  • Steins;Gate Reboot on Steam: If you play on Steam Deck or PC in general, this is the only version you should consider. It plays fantastic on Steam Deck out of the box (with the latest update) as well.

Hopefully this helped you decide where you should get Steins;Gate Reboot and if you already own it on PC, made you try it again since it has been fixed on Steam Deck now.

Steins;Gate Re:Boot is now available for PC (Steam) with the PS5, Switch 2, Switch, and Xbox Series versions launching on October 29 in the West. Read our review of it here.
